 2023 Preview 


       St. Paul's completed the 2022 season with a 7-6 record. With their 5-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 6A region one, the Saints earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. St. Paul's lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Theodore team by a score of 28-0.

       The Saints lost as many games as in any season since 2008.

       As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, St. Paul's has gone a combined 138-35. Their 79.8% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 6A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, St. Paul's has finished a combined 233-83. Their 74.0% winning percentage ranks 6th in Class 6A and 19th in the AHSAA. The Saints have been successful on the football field with twenty-three winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 2008.




       The Saints are led by head coach Ham Barnett who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 7-6 record in his first season at St. Paul's. Under his direction the Saints have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Barnett. Over the course of his career, Coach Barnett's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of one time .

       The Saints have one of the toughest schedules in the state this season. Their non-region opponents finished 23-4 last year. The Saints have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 6A. Their opponents had a combined record of 68-48 last season. That ranks 4th in Class 6A and 29th in the AHSAA.

       The Saints have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region one this season. They have qualified for the playoffs every year since 2009 and are hopeful to continue that streak in 2023.

      Sophomore LB Anthony Jones will be back in 2023 for another season on defense for the Saints.

       The Saints open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent UMS-Wright on Friday, August 25 at Ervin S. Cooper Stadium. Last year the UMS-Wright Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 12-1 and in first place in Class 5A region one. The Bulldogs lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 5A playoffs to Charles Henderson by a score of 19-16.

       St. Paul's and UMS-Wright have met a total of 45 times on the football field. The Saints have a 22-23-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2022 with UMS-Wright winning by a score of 21-14.

       St. Paul's lost 6A All-State  defensive back Chris Bracy to graduation. He was named to the second team last season.

       The Saints return 6A All-State sophomore linebacker Anthony Jones. He was named to the second team last season.
